Launched in October 2000, Lights On After School is the only nationwide event celebrating afterschool programs and their important role in the lives of children, families, and communities. Mercer University’s MerServe student volunteers participate in the annual National Lights on After School Event by hosting fun and engaging art, STEM, and sports activities throughout local elementary and middle schools. All students need do is form a team of 2 or more and select their activity. Past activities have included face painting, corn hole, slime making, and cookie decorating.

This year, MerServe chose the Kings Park Community Center, in East Macon, Ga, and the students in its After School Program as the site for the student volunteers to hold this year’s Lights on After School Event. STEM activities, fun, games and snacks were provided by MerServe.

The parnership between Mercer University, the Kings Park Community Neighborhood Association and the Kings Park Community residents was developed last year through a collaboration formed by Kelvin Middleton, of MGB Inc. and Lauren Shinholster, of Mercer University, that also provides an after-school “Empower Hour” volunteer student tutors, 3 days/week, at the Kings Park Community Center, in East Macon.

Kelvin B. Middleton, Kings Park Community Center East Macon, MerServe Students Held Slime Workshop in East Macon

Macon, Georgia, March 2, 2023

Mercer University, Merserve students developed a one-day workshop for the Kings Park community youth to engage in social media platforms that were promoting the 36th Annual Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards and the associated trademark “Slime” events that have been used by social influencers, bloggers, celebrities, professional athletes and students worldwide. The workshop taught the youth how to make their own Slime; and, how to use their collective voices for advocacy and social change.

Kelvin Middleton, CEO, of MGB INC., played an integral role in cultivating the partnership with Mercer University and the MerServe student volunteers who provide peer-to-peer academic tutoring and special events for youth in the Kings Park community in East Macon.

Mercer University, MerServe student volunteers made Slime Gloop in a cup for the Kings Park youth.

2023 Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards

The 36th Annual Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards ceremony was held on March 4, 2023, at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, California with Nate Burleson and Charli D’Amelio serving as hosts.[3][4]

The Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards, also known as the KCAs or Kids’ Choice, is an annual American children’s awards ceremony show produced by Nickelodeon. Usually held on a Saturday night in March or early April, the show honors the year’s biggest in television, film, music, and sports as voted by viewers worldwide of Nickelodeon networks. Winners receive a hollow orange blimp figurine, a logo outline for much of the network’s 1984–2009 era, which also functions as a kaleidoscope.[1]

The show features numerous celebrity guests and musical acts. Since 2002, slime stunts have been incorporated into the show. The KCAs also host live entertainment. It has also been known to cover people with the network’s trademark green slime.

More Information about the Tubman Museum of Art, History and Culture:

The Tubman Museum is the largest museum in the nation dedicated to educating people about the Art, History and Culture of African Americans.

The mission of the Tubman African American Museum is to explore, celebrate and share the rich art and history of African Americans, to be a center of social and civic engagement, and a source of experiences that enrich cultural understanding and inspire positive change.

The school visits include handcrafted educational outreach workshops that cater to the needs of your institution ranging from art to diversity and character building. Students can be guaranteed a fun filled field trip at the Tubman! The field trip will include trip around the museum with a knowledgeable tour guide and a video. Be sure to make use of our added-value services which include an art or craft workshop.

The Tubman African American Museum seeks to align with community organizations, businesses, and institutions of learning through our education programs and services. The mission of the Tubman Museum is to educate people about African American art, history and culture and to promote harmony among all races. In order to fulfill that mission we realize that we must not be bound by the walls of our building. But rather, we must place a focus on outreach into our community and bring the museum resources to them.

We are addressing the most serious issues within our educational system facing both Georgia and the nation. Uniquely positioned as both accessible and acceptable, the museum serves as a safe and non-threatening method of delivering needed information and instruction on a myriad of topics to a critical segment of our population. Some of the tactics involve:

  • Heritage Summer Camp
  • John Oliver Killens Workshop
  • Outreach Teachers
  • After School Instruction
