MBG INC. , a BIPOC community-based initiative in Macon, GA the recipient of an ALDI’s Cares grant of $500.00 in gift cards.

Kelvin Middleton, of MGB INC. states that the gift cards will meet a critical gap that MGB INC. is addressing in food insecurity and the lack of basic, essential human needs and assistance for the marginalized; and, also seniors who are living in poverty who have to chose between food, basic essentials & hygiene, medicine and housing & utilities.

ALDI is a part of the communities where each of its stores are located. Its Responsibility means making a positive contribution to the community by supporting nonprofit organizations dedicated to improving Children’s Health & Wellness and combating Food Insecurity. For organizations whose mission or core programs meet these pressing issues head on, ALDI provides financial contributions and donations of products or gift cards.

MGB INC Partners with Men About Change to Target Youth Obesity in Macon, GA

MGB INC (Men Giving Back) and Men About Change, two African American male, community-based organizations have developed a partnership to target escalating youth obesity in Macon, GA.  The program launched, on Monday, at the Men About Change after school program

According to The Telegraph (2018), a report by the New York University School of Medicine’s Department of Population Health ranked Macon as one of the highest in rates of obesity among larger Georgia cities.  The City of Health Dashboard tracks 36 measures affecting health for the 500 largest cities (those with populations of about 66,000 or more).  Diabetes rates in the cities assessed in Georgia ranged from a low of 7.2% of adults in Sandy Springs (a more affluent community) to a high of 16.7% in Macon, Georgia where children and families are physically inactive.

Many adverse health effects are associated with overweight and are observed in children and adolescents: increased morbidity & mortality in later life, Asthma, Diabetes (Type 2), Hypertension, Orthopedic complications, Sleep Apnea, Psycho-social Effects & Stigma, taunting & bullying by peers, depression & suicidal tendencies.

MGB INC will provide free health and fitness programs [NFL Play 60, My Plate nutrition program, Presidential Active Lifestyle Award (PALA) program and a prominent national program recreational running program that targets sedentary lifestyles.

Men About Change is housed on the campus of Glorious Hope Baptist Church, Macon, GA, under the leadership of senior pastor, Dr. John Herring.  Pastor Herring and Glorious Hope Baptist Church have partnered with Men About Change and provides meeting space, financial support and mentors to sustain and grow the initiative.  Men About Change provides academic support, cultural enrichment, behavior modification and emotional support to well over 100 boys and girls per session from Pre-K to 8th grade.

On December 19, 2019, Dr. Erwin Clowers, CEO, Men About Change, Macon, GA, graciously accepted a donation of new education and recreational books, for it’s Pre-K program, from MGB INC., a local public charity.  Kelvin Middleton, CEO, MGB INC. states that is was a privilege to partner with Dr. Clowers to provide high-quality education materials to ‘bridge’ the learning process during the holiday season when children will be spending more time with their families; and, books motivate parents and guardians to be engaged in their children’s development in reading, learning and cognitive skills.  Furthermore, Dr. Clowers has poured his personal finances, heart and soul into Men About Change for well over 25 years trying to impact the lives of vulnerable Macon youth; and, we all need to do more.

2019 LETS MOVE DEKALB BACK TO SCHOOL EXPO HOSTS YOUTH FROM MACON, GA

The Center Helping Obesity in Children End Successfully (C.H.O.I.C.E.), of Atlanta, Ga, extended an invitation to MGB INC., a grassroots, community-based organization, in  Macon, GA,, for the 9th consecutive year, to participate in its annual Let’s Move Back to School Expo.

On, Saturday, July 27, 2019, MGB INC. parent volunteers and twenty (20) Macon youth traveled to Atlanta for the day-long event.  MGB volunteers performed as volunteers for the Let’s Move Expo in addition to approximately 90 other volunteer organizations while the Macon youth participated in the festivities.

All Macon parents and youth received back packs, school supplies, goodie bags with health and nutrition items; and, food distributions from the Atlanta Community Food Bank 30,000 lb donation.  Over 1,600 needy families and their children attended the event.

Let’s Move! is a comprehensive initiative, launched by former First Lady Michelle Obama, dedicated to solving the challenge of childhood obesity within a generation, so that children born today will grow up healthier and able to pursue their dreams. Combining comprehensive strategies with common sense, Let’s Move! is about putting children on the path to a healthy future during their earliest months and years.

Everyone has a role to play in reducing childhood obesity, including parents, elected officials from all levels of government, schools, health care professionals, faith-based and community-based organizations, and private sector companies. Your involvement is key to ensuring a healthy future for our children.

The 9th Annual Let’s Move! DeKalb Back-to-School Expo took place on Saturday, July 27, 2019 at the Exchange Park Recreation Center located at 2771 Columbia Drive in Decatur, Georgia and featured the following:

  • FREE SCHOOL SUPPLIES (Back Packs and School Supplies were distributed to over 1,200 youth)
  • MOBILE FOOD PANTRY (Atlanta Community Food Bank distributed over 30,000 lbs. of food, beverages including fresh vegetables and fruit
  • NUTRITION EDUCATION  (Exhibitions, demonstrations and interactive programming)
  • HEALTHY LIFESTYLE INFORMATION  (Exhibitions, demonstrations and interactive programming)

MGB INC. (“Men Giving Back”), a grassroots initiative, in Macon, Georgia, is the proud recipient of a 2019 ALDI Smart Kids Program grant.

Kelvin Middleton, CEO/President, of MGB INC. states that the grant will provide support for MGB’s Health and Wellness Initiative which targets youth obesity and sedentary lifestyles in Macon/Bibb County by utilizing proven best practices such as NFL Play 60, MyPlate the current nutrition guide published by the USDA Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion; and, empowering men in the community to become active participants in the health and welfare of their children.

ALDI established the ALDI Smart Kids Program to provide funding and/or gift cards to local organizations that promote kids being active and healthy.

Through the ALDI Smart Kids grant program, ALDI partners with local nonprofit organizations including K-12 schools, fire and police departments, and faith-based organizations that serve the community. MGB INC. RECEIVES 2019 SAUCONY RUN FOR GOOD FOUNDATION GRANT

MGB INC. is the proud recipient of the prestigious 2019 Saucony Run for Good Foundation grant of $10,000.  The Saucony Run for Good Foundation was established to help combat childhood obesity by providing financial support to community-based youth running programs. The mission of the Saucony Foundation is to improve the lives of children by further optimizing the impact and success of community organizations that inspire kids to run. Since 2006, the Saucony Run for Good Foundation has awarded over one million dollars to nearly 120 schools and community organizations–all dedicated to preventing childhood obesity through running and an active lifestyle. 

According the the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), childhood obesity has more than tripled over the past 30 years.  One of five children, age 6 to 11, is considered obese.  The number are even higher in African American and Hispanic communities, where nearly 40% of the children are overweight or obese.  Many will face chronic obesity-related health problems like heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer and asthma.

Kelvin Middleton, President/CEO, of MGB INC. states that Macon has the highest obesity rate of similar major cities in the United States according to a recent study conducted by the New York University School of Medicine, Department of Public Health. (Macon Telegraph, May 21, 2018).  “We are facing a crisis epidemic”, states Middleton, “and we cannot wait for anyone else to save our children and families.”  The Saucony Run for Good Foundation brand is focused on runners and social responsibility; and, will directly help combat childhood obesity and also include instruction related nutrition, self-esteem, social skills and making appropriate, healthy choices.

Empowering Students to Adopt Healthy Lifestyles
Introducing the Inaugural Funding Opportunity

The inaugural funding opportunity will support schools participating in the Presidential Youth Fitness Program for the 2013–2014 and 2014–2015 school years.* Applications will be accepted online from April 1 through April 30, 2013.

*This is a private funding program administered by the AAU, AAHPERD, NFFSN, and The Cooper Institute®, co-sponsors of the PYFP. This is not a government grant program. The availability and administration of this funding opportunity, including the selection of recipients and all other decisions of the funding program, are not endorsed by any federal agency or office. No federal funds are being used in or for the administration or awarding of this private funding opportunity.

What the Funding Covers

This funding opportunity supports participation in the Presidential Youth Fitness Program for a period of two years—providing eligible schools with 100% of the elements that make up the three core pillars of the Presidential Youth Fitness Program for Year 1 and 50% matching support for Year 2. For a school of 500 students, the dollar equivalent for funding is $1,402 for Year 1 and $526 for Year 2. Schools that are selected to receive funding will not receive a check to purchase materials or supplies. The core program elements, below, will be sent directly to the school from the supplier:
1)FITNESSGRAM® assessment: Funded schools will receive one site license of the FITNESSGRAM/ACTIVITYGRAM® 9.x software1; annual access to the latest edition of the e-book version of the FITNESSGRAM manual, test administration videos, and cadences for tests (PACER, push-up, and curl-up); annual technical support for the FITNESSGRAM 9.x site license; annual web hosting by The Cooper Institute®; and the ability to print or email student reports. Please note that there are specific software needs that must be met in order for aspects of FITNESSGRAM 9.x software to function properly2.
2)Professional development and education for physical educators: Physical educators will receive access to a series of self-paced, virtual training opportunities and web-based resources to facilitate successful program implementation.
3)Awards and recognition for students: Schools will receive a quantity3 of Presidential Youth Fitness Awards (emblems and certificates) to present to students in recognition of their achieving the Healthy Fitness Zone® standard on at least five test items from the six fitness/health components.

What the Funding Doesn’t Cover

These items are NOT covered:
The staff time required by the school IT department to set up software in Year 1 (2013–2014)
The purchase of instructional materials used to conduct the various tests in the FITNESSGRAM® assessment (see below)
Substitute teacher costs associated with physical education teacher participation in professional development trainings
A project manager nor a grant manager

Instructional materials may include gym mats, cones, scales, a CD player, a stop watch, a whistle, calipers, masking or athletic tape, and a sit-and-reach box. Instructional materials that may be used are dependent upon the test item offered and preference of the educator.

2Browser requirements: Internet Explorer 7 or above; Firefox 2 or 3. Software does not support Safari nor Google Chrome. Connectivity, school use: T1 or fiber optic lines. We highly recommend a fast, secure, and stable connection. Otherwise, the user experience will not be optimal. Screen resolution: 1024 x 768. For FITNESSGRAM reports (generated as PDFs), schools and homes must have Adobe Reader 7 or above. If you’re using Windows VISTA OS, you must use Adobe Reader 9.

3Quantity is 50% of student enrollment. Data indicates that approximately 40% (or less) of students participating in the FITNESSGRAM assessment achieve the Healthy Fitness Zone on five or more events. Extra awards can be kept by the school and used for following years’ implementation of the Presidential Youth Fitness Program.
