FATHERING FACTS:

  • An estimated 24.7 million children (36.3%) live absent from their biological father.
  • There are almost 17 million children (25%) living with their single mothers.
  • There are nearly 1.9 million single fathers with children under 18.
  • About 40% of the children who live in fatherless households have not seen their fathers in at least a year and 50% of the children who do not live with their fathers have never stepped foot in their father’s home
  • Children who live absent from their biological fathers, on average, are more likely to be poor, experience educational, health, emotional, behavioral, psychological problems, be victims of child abuse, and engage in criminal behavioral than their peers who live with their married, biological mother and father
  • Bibb County Public Schools reports that over 2,000 students live in homes where one or both parents are incarcerated.

NGB INC., in partnership with Family First, a prominent national non-profit, launched an All Pro Dad chapter, spearheaded by former NFL Tony Dungy, in Bibb County Public Schools in 2010. Dungy’s fatherhood role model was his own dad, Wilber Dungy.  Tony says, he learned that being a good father takes commitment and compassion.  Dungy mentored hundreds of young, male professional athletes during his career in the NFL.  Our Director, Kelvin Middleton, who was raised in a single parent home, by his mother, and was one of eleven children in the family, was privileged to be mentored by Coach Dungy during his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers.  Coach Dungy challenges the young men he coaches with the responsibility of going back into their neighborhoods to instill the same character, integrity, discipline, purpose and vision that his father instilled in him.  Dungy continues to encourage and support the men he mentored in the NFL even after their careers as professional athletes have ceased.

All Pro Dad provides daily messages of encouragement from Coach Dungy and program materials.  All Pro Dad Saturday breakfast meetings are held for fathers and their children during the school year. All Pro Dad – Macon was launched in collaboration with Ingram-Pye Elementary School, Bibb County Public School, Macon, GA, in 2010. Over 150 dads, guardians and significant male role models and their children participated in the program.

Plans for 2012-2013 include rolling All Pro Dad to local churches, city and county recreation centers, youth detention centers and community-based initiatives.
